I also was a little saddened how Deborah never really got to see the outcome of the book, I think she would have enjoyed it a lot. I wish that they would have been compensated for the amazing contribution their mother’s cells had in the science community because something is ironic about them not having health insurance. It is cool to get to know where some things come from, even if in fact they were stolen from her family. I had used HeLa cells when I was a sophomore at Penn State Lehigh Valley, but I never took the time to think about what HeLa cells actually were. It was packed with drama and it really made realize how easy we have our lives right now. My final impression of the book was that it was definitely a good book to read. Skloot learned that Deborah was in a good place when she died and that she found comfort in knowing that she will one day see her mother in heaven. Skloot finishes the book and tries to get ahold of Deborah so that they can read it together but learns that she has died shortly after Mother’s day. Deborah’s brother Sonny was in debt from getting a procedure done, and Zakariya was still getting in trouble with the law. In 2009, Skloot returns to Clover Virginia to find that everything was gone and that cousin Gary had died of a heart attack and that cousin Day, Cootie and Fred had all passed away and that really put some strain on Deborah. James, Deborah’s husband tells the congregation that they will let the next generation know the great contribution their great-grandmother did for the world. Skloot attended Sonny’s granddaughters baptism and was asked to give a talk about the HeLa cells. Deborah was able to make a full recovery but was weak. Thankfully her grandson saved her life by helping her keep consciousness. She decides to go back to school to learn more about her mother’s cells, and one day at church she had a stroke. It turns out the the stress caused Deborah to have extremely high blood pressure and blood sugar. Gary explains that they see the immortality of Henrietta differently then the scientist. They read some scripture together and he explains to her that they believe that Henrietta’s cells are heaven sent and that that is resurrection to do good in this world. Deborah goes home to look at the hives that she had and Skloot stays behind to talk about the spiritual experience she witnessed. Skloot is dumbfounded by the experience that she witnessed. Gary is very close to his cousin and realizes that something is off with his cousin so he starts to pray over her and this seems to help her. ![]() They drive back to Clover and they see Deborah’s cousin Gary. ![]() Skloot then becomes concerned with Deborah’s manic erratic behavior. Deborah then gets physical with Skloot slamming her into a wall after Skloot smiled at Deborah and she took it as mocking her. When Skloot was looking at the record, Deborah was very protective and paranoid that she will copy the record or that she was working for someone else. This really got to Deborah and she finally allowed Skloot to look at her mother’s medical record file. ![]() They found out the Crownsville was actually very overpopulated and understaffed when her sister was staying there and that she was part of two brain studies without the family’s consent. They believe that Elsie may have died of internal bleeding caused by self induced vomiting. They were able to retrieve medical records for her sister and they found out a picture of her sister crying a bruised and a white woman with her hand up. Deborah made peace with Hopkins, but still had to make peace with where her epileptic sister was hospitalized, Crownsville. ![]()
